Magirus GmbH is a truck manufacturer based in Ulm, Germany, founded by Conrad Dietrich Magirus (1824–1895). The company began manufacturing fire-fighting vehicles in 1866. In the late 1910s, it started the production of trucks and buses. These vehicles developed a reputation for high engineering standards, able to operate under the most arduous conditions.

The company also invented the turntable ladder, as Magirus Leiter, which quickly became an essential item of fire brigade equipment worldwide.

The parent company was Klöckner Humboldt Deutz AG, maker of the well-known Deutz engines, so the brand commonly used was Magirus Deutz, and for a short time Klöckner. The logo of Magirus Deutz was a stylised M with a sharp, long center point to represent the tower of the Ulm Cathedral.

In 1975, Magirus was purchased by Iveco which continued producing some Magirus trucks for a short while under the name “Iveco Magirus” before abandoning it completely in most countries. However, Iveco trucks were sold under the Magirus brand in Germany and other European and Middle Eastern markets until the end of the 1980s. Today, the Magirus brand is only used for the company’s firefighting equipment section, not for the whole fleet of manufactured trucks.

In 1974 he was awarded the contract (called Delta Project) for delivery in 1975-1976 about 9,500 dumper and flatbed trucks Magirus М 232 D 19 and Magirus M 290 D 26 in the USSR to work on the construction of Baikal–Amur Mainline (BAM). These models are export options KHD products on the domestic market of Germany were not supplied. By January 1, 1975 for the first batch of Magirus for BAM building was ready to be sent to the Soviet Union. Many of these trucks are working now. As a result of this, the largest in the company’s history, and other export transactions in 1975 export products accounted for 70% of total production Magirus-Deutz, and the firm took the second place among the German truck manufacturers.

Iveco Magirus is one of the leading manufacturers of fire fighting equipment. The underpinnings for the line of fire fighting trucks are primarily Iveco’s own chassis designs and engines, but occasionally platforms from other truck manufacturers serve as the base for specialized or customized fire-fighting equipment layouts. With its Magirus brand turntable ladder, Iveco Magirus is the unrivalled global market leader by sales.

Most trucks from Magirus are also known as Magirus Deutz because the air-cooled engine came from the factory of Deutz AG. These engines are still being sold for agricultural and marine use.

Though seldom seen today, the Magirus company produced almost all of the early, movable ladders used in the construction of large, rigid airships in both the Germany and the United States. The multi-extension, wooden ladders were mounted on massively constructed, wooden carriage frames with a “fifth-wheel” style, forward axle assembly. Although it appeared to be designed for horses, the ladders could be easily moved by two men. The carriage was equipped with four, hand screw type “outriggers” that would resist the ladder from tipping. The ladder did not swivel on the carriage. It was elevated and extended only towards the front of the carriage. In the “working” position, the ladder had to be elevated to about an 80 degree angle in order to allow full extension to 85 feet. (I do not know what the maximum extended length of the largest wooden Magirus ladder was, but the ones used during the erection of the Goodyear-Zeppelin Corporation’s USS AKRON and USS MACON reached to 85 feet.)

They can be seen, commonly, in early photographs of airships under construction in the 1920s and 1930s.

SAMIL logo

SAMIL Trucks (South African MILitary) are the standard logistical transport vehicles of the South African National Defence Force, re-manufactured by Truck-Makers in Rosslyn, Pretoria, Drakensberg Truck Manufacturers in Wallmannsthal, N1 Trucks in Wallmansthal and Transvaal Motors in Boksburg. The civilian versions of these trucks are called SAMAG (South African MAGirus). Production of these vehicles ended in 1998.

These trucks all have a high strength chassis, making them capable of handling severe off-road conditions and thus an ideal vehicle for the South African Army.

In recent years, reconditioned and re-manufactured ex-military SAMIL trucks have also been made available to the private sector and vehicles have been sold to mining groups, exploration companies, contractors, farmers and many other organisations in fields such as tourism and forestry.

Essentially upgraded versions of Magirus Deutz diesel-engined trucks, the range includes the following vehicles:

The SAMIL 20 is an upgraded Magirus Deutz 130M7FAL 4×4 2-ton (load) truck.

The initial SAMIL 20 Mark I model was air-cooled, but the later SAMIL 20 Mark II was fitted with a lighter South African-manufactured water-cooled Atlantis Diesel Engines (ADE) motor because of sanctions-era restrictions imposed by United Nations Security Council Resolution 418. It also had a lighter fuel tank and a modified transmission.

The Bulldog and Rhino Buffel variants are based on the SAMIL 20.

The SAMIL 50 is an upgraded Magirus Deutz 192D12AL 4×4 5-ton (load) truck. Classified as a medium truck, it has a canvas cover over a steel framework around the cargo area; seats for up to 40 passengers may be installed along the sides or down the center, back to back. Variants include a communications vehicle, battery-charging vehicle, welding shop, tanker, field kitchen, mobile personnel shower and container transporter.

As with the SAMIL 20, the initial SAMIL 50 Mark I model was air-cooled, but the later SAMIL 50 Mark II was fitted with a lighter water-cooled ADE motor, a lighter fuel tank and a modified transmission. The Mark II has the same range of variants as the Mark I.

Unic was a French manufacturer founded in 1905, and active as an automobile producer until July 1938. After this the company continued to produce commercial vehicles, retaining its independence for a further fourteen years before being purchased in 1952 by Henri Pigozzi, who was keen to develop Unic as a commercial vehicle arm of the then flourishing Simca business.

Origins

Unic was founded by Georges Richard after he left Richard-Brasier. In 1905 Richard had a meeting with the entrepreneur-financier Baron Henri de Rothschild and obtained funding for the creation of the “société anonyme des automobiles Unic“, based at Puteaux. The objective was to manufacture “unique” (rather than mainstream) vehicles, and at the start the company made only light cars and taxis with two-cylinder and four-cylinder engines.

The taxi business would remain important to Unic for more than three decades, while Rothschild’s steady financial support through good times and bad, provided stability which sustained the business, critically during the immediate post-war years.

Growth and diversification

Although the manufacturer’s initial range was restricted to light cars, their popularity as taxis led to the production of delivery vans and other small utility style vehicles. The 1943 cc 12 CV (9 kW) four-cylinder model (used mainly as a taxi) was extremely successful and survived in production for nearly 20 years. (The engine was enlarged later to 2120 cc.) During World War I, taxis made by the company participated in the Marne operation. After World War I, a new four-cylinder (1847 cc) was offered, along with the taxis.

First truck and founder’s death

In 1922 the firm introduced a three-ton truck, called the Unic MSC, which marked the start of a switch towards production of larger commercial vehicles. 1922 was also the year when the founder of Unic, Georges Richard, died while awaiting transfer to a Paris clinic, following a motor accident en route to Rouen. Georges Dubois, hitherto in charge of vehicle testing, took on responsibility for the business.

Passenger cars in the 1920s

During the 1920s, a 1997 cc sports model was marketed and in some models sleeve valve engines were used.

By the time of the 19th Paris Motor Show, in October 1924, Unic were exhibiting three passenger cars. All had four cylinder engines, although large 4-cylinder engines such as that fitted in the 16HP model were by now seen as rather old fashioned:

  • Unic “Type L1T” 10 CV/HP: 4-cylinder 1843 cc: wheelbase 3,050 mm (120.1 in)
  • Unic “Type L3T” 11 CV/HP: 4-cylinder 2000 cc: wheelbase 3,050 mm (120.1 in)
  • Unic 16 CV/HP: 4-cylinder 3450 cc: wheelbase 3,450 mm (135.8 in)

Four years later, at the 22nd Paris Motor Show, only one of the two cars on show was fitted with a 4-cylinder engine. This was an evolution of the two litre model exhibited in 1924, now branded as the Unic “Type L9”, with a 3,150 mm (124.0 in) wheelbase and usually fitted with “Torpedo” or “Berline” (saloon/sedan) bodies. However, for the 1929 model year attention was now focused on the company’s first 8-cylinder model. The new Unic 14 CV/HP “Type H1” featured a 2½-litre straight-8 power unit and sat on a substantial 3,460 mm (136.2 in) wheelbase. It was priced at 55,000 francs in bare chassis form.

Passenger cars in the 1930s

The 8-cylinder Unic “Type H1” introduced in 1928 was progressively updated in accordance with the changing tastes of the time: by 1933 car had evolved into the Unic “Type H3” and the engine size had grown from 2½-litres to 2646cc. October 1933 was nevertheless the last time an 8-cylinder passenger car would appear on the Unic show stand.

For the next few years the company focused on 4-cylinder cars in the 11 CV/HP tax band, just as they had through the mid-1920s. For 1934 Unic announced their new “Type U4” model, featuring a 2-litre side-valve engine and now also employing a 4-speed transmission. The body-work of the standard 5-seater “berline” (sedan/saloon) was no longer completely flat-backed, but the proportions of the car may have drawn criticism, since between the car’s October 1933 launch and May 1934, the rear overhang was slightly increased, while at the front a slightly raked grill replaced the flat one, and the overall profile became a little more streamlined. In addition to this passenger car, Unic continued to produce through 1934 a similarly sized taxi of “great robustness”.

Final year of car production

In March 1937 Unic updated their four-cylinder passenger car model for the last time, and for the 1937 October Motor Show the six-cylinder model was also given a more streamlined look, in line with the fashion of the time. By this time the passenger car range was down to just these two models. The Unic Type U4D was a four-cylinder 2,150 (12CV) car which featured overhead valves and offered a maximum output of 55 hp (41 kW), supported by a robust rather traditional chassis with a 3,160 mm (124.4 in) wheelbase. The imposing six-cylinder Unic Type U6C provided 85 hp (63 kW) from a 3,000cc engine (17CV), transmitted via an electromagnetic “Cotal” preselector gear box, with a choice of wheelbase lengths between 3,200 mm (126.0 in) and 3,370 mm (132.7 in).

The appeal of Unic passenger cars by this time derived not from technical brilliance nor from stunning originality. Those who appreciated the cars were impressed by excellent reliability resulting from a meticulous approach taken during the production process. Also admired were their elegant spacious bodies, most of which came from the coach builder Letourneur et Marchand or from their subsidiary, Autobineau. Unic cars by now were not being sold in large numbers and this was reflected in the price. At the 1937 Motor Show the standard steel-bodied Unic Type U-4 D with its 12CV engine was priced at 53,750 francs (or 35,500 francs in bare chassis form). The slightly more powerful 13CV Talbot Type T4 “Minor” was listed at 42,500 Francs (or 35,000 Francs in bare chassis form), while from the top end of the Citroën range a long wheel base “familiale” version of the Traction 11CV Longue could be had for 28,900 francs including the body, while prototype testing was already well under way of a 2867cc (15/16CV) version of the aggressively priced and marketed Citroën Traction. Few customers in this class were willing to pay the price for the Unic’s virtues of dependability, style and space, and Unic passenger car production ceased in July 1938.

After 1938 Unic concentrated in the truck business, being one of the leading French makes. In 1966 it was taken over by the Italian company Fiat and eventually merged into Iveco in 1975.

In 1952, the firm was taken over by Simca, headed by Henri Pigozzi, who wanted a commercial vehicle production unit. Trucks of this period are commonly referred to as Unic-Simca trucks.

In 1956 the French arm of the Swiss truck manufacturer Saurer was taken over.

In 1966 Unic joined the Fiat Group.

In 1975 a holding company named IVECO was established covering truck and bus brands such as Fiat, OM, Lancia, UNIC and Magirus.

In 1976 UNIC-FIAT S.A. became UNIC S.A.

In 1992 IVECO UNIC S.A. changed its name to IVECO FRANCE S.A.

In 2003, the company’s headquarters moved from Villejuif to Boissy St Léger, where a second facility was established in 1995.

Magirus GmbH is a truck manufacturer based in Ulm, Germany, founded by Conrad Dietrich Magirus (1824–1895). The company began manufacturing fire-fighting vehicles in 1866. In the late 1910s, it started the production of trucks and buses. These vehicles developed a reputation for high engineering standards, able to operate under the most arduous conditions.

The company also invented the turntable ladder, as Magirus Leiter, which quickly became an essential item of fire brigade equipment worldwide.

Deutz Logo

The parent company was Klöckner Humboldt Deutz AG, maker of the well-known Deutz engines, so the brand commonly used was Magirus Deutz, and for a short time Klöckner. The logo of Magirus Deutz was a stylised M with a sharp, long center point to represent the tower of the Ulm Cathedral.

In 1975, Magirus was purchased by Iveco which continued producing some Magirus trucks for a short while under the name “Iveco Magirus” before abandoning it completely in most countries. However, Iveco trucks were sold under the Magirus brand in Germany and other European and Middle Eastern markets until the end of the 1980s. Today, the Magirus brand is only used for the company’s firefighting equipment section, not for the whole fleet of manufactured trucks.

Most trucks from Magirus are also known as Magirus Deutz because the air-cooled engine came from the factory of Deutz AG. These engines are still being sold for agricultural and marine use.

Though seldom seen today, the Magirus company produced almost all of the early, movable ladders used in the construction of large, rigid airships in both the Germany and the United States. The multi-extension, wooden ladders were mounted on massively constructed, wooden carriage frames with a “fifth-wheel” style, forward axle assembly. Although it appeared to be designed for horses, the ladders could be easily moved by two men. The carriage was equipped with four, hand screw type “outriggers” that would resist the ladder from tipping. The ladder did not swivel on the carriage. It was elevated and extended only towards the front of the carriage. In the “working” position, the ladder had to be elevated to about an 80 degree angle in order to allow full extension to 85 feet. (I do not know what the maximum extended length of the largest wooden Magirus ladder was, but the ones used during the erection of the Goodyear-Zeppelin Corporation’s USS AKRON and USS MACON reached to 85 feet.)

Kässbohrer Fahrzeugwerke

was a German vehicle manufacturer in Ulm. Its products were buses, coaches, vehicle transporters, trailers and special vehicles like snow groomer vehicles.

In 1893, Karl Kässbohrer founded the Wagenfabrik Kässbohrer in Ulm. In 1922, Kässbohrer developed a trailer for goods transport, having solid rubber wheels. When Karl Kässbohrer senior died, his sons, Karl junior and Otto Kässbohrer, took over the company. In 1969, Kässbohrer was Germany’s biggest coach and truck trailer producer. Kässbohrer’s coaches and buses were named Setra. The snow-grooming vehicles were called PistenBully and 2,000 were sold between 1979 and 1989. At the end of the 1990s, about 9,000 employees worked for Kässbohrer.

Starting in 1993, the company began to fall apart. The division’s truck bodies, semi-trailers and trailers were sold to the competitor Kögel. In 1994, the snow groomer vehicles division was spun off to Kässbohrer Geländefahrzeug (all-terrain vehicle) GmbH, based in Laupheim, which also produces beach cleaners. In the end, Mercedes-Benz bought the bus and coach division in 1995 and the new name EvoBus was introduced. The only division which is still family owned is Kässbohrer Transport Technik in Salzburg, Austria, where vehicle transporters are built.

A great number of Kässbohrer Setra coaches and buses are still in service on European roads, sometimes having a mileage of more than a million kilometers.

Dux kwam voort uit de Polyphon Musikwerken. Aanvankelijk werden de Dux’ gebouwd onder de naam Polymobil en waren in licentie gebouwde auto’s en trucks. Later begon men met eigen ontwerpen en werd de autotak verzelfstandigd. In 1918 vormt het samen met PrestoMagirus en Vomag de Deutschen Automobil-Konzern (DAK). In 1926 neemt het in Chemnitz gezetelde Presto Dux over en verdwijnt de merknaam Dux. N.A.G. neemt Presto over in 1930, later wordt een deel van N.A.G. overgenomen door Auto Union, een ander deel door Büssing – See more at: http://www.deautogids.nl/auto/merk

Hallo!
Ich bin Ihr Kollege – Automobilhistoriker.
Ich suche seit Langem die Verbindung zwischen Firma “Dux” (Julius Möller) in Moskau und “Polyphon” in Deutschland. Beide haben Marke “Dux” benutzt, aber in Russland viel früher, als in Deutschland. Beide haben “Oldsmobile” nach US-Lizenz hergestellt – in Russland unter Marke “Duxmobil”. Es gibt keine Beweise über die Verbindungen, aber viel Indizien. Wissen Sie was darüber?
Wenn Sie gute Bilder und Informationen über “Dux” in Russland haben möchten, schreiben Sie mir. Über die Firma verfüge ich viel Unterlagen.

Die Tadano Faun GmbH (Fahrzeugfabriken Ansbach und Nürnberg GmbH) ist ein europäischer Hersteller von Mobilkranen mit Sitz im fränkischen Lauf an der Pegnitzund hundertprozentiges Tochterunternehmen der japanischen Tadano Ltd.

Heutige Unternehmensstruktur

Die Tadano Faun GmbH ist seit der Übernahme des deutschen Fahrzeugherstellers Faun durch den japanischen Kranproduzenten Tadano Ltd. im Jahre 1990 ein Tochterunternehmen dieses Unternehmens. Im Werk in Lauf werden Auto- und Mobilkräne sowie Spezialfahrzeuge produziert. Die Tadano Faun GmbH war die Vertriebsgesellschaft der produzierenden Faun GmbH. Seit 2012 sind beide Gesellschaften zur Tadano Faun GmbH verschmolzen.

Buses, Fire&Rescue, Sewingmachines, Chassis, Motors, Cycles +, Motorcycles, Scooters, Trucks, Military Equipment, CSEPEL Hungaria Csepel is een historisch Hongaars merk van motorfietsen.002 Csepel: Manfred Weiss Stahl- und Metallwerke AG Csepel, later Mogürt, Boedapest (19371951). Hongaars merk dat ontstond uit de WM (Weiss, Manfred)-bromfietsfabriek. Csepel bouwde grote aantallen 98-, 123- en 146 cc tweetakt-motorfietsen. Het bedrijf dat gevestigd was in Csepel bij Boedapest werd overgenomen door Mogürt in Boedapest. In 1945 werd het een staatsbedrijf. Men ging vanaf 1947 50 cc bromfietsen, scootershulpmotoren en 100 cc motorfietsjes maken. Deze laatsten werden snel vervangen door 125 cc uitvoeringen. De eerste 250 cc machines verscheen in 1950. In 1952 veranderde de naam in Pannonia en Danuvia. Pannonia-modellen werden in grote aantallen geëxporteerd. In dezelfde fabriek produceerde men ook scooters onder de naam Tünde en motorfietsen met de merknaam White (waarschijnlijk naar de naam van Manfred Weiss). Zie ook Panni, Tünde, WM, Dongo en Berva. Het bedrijf heeft ook auto‘s en bussen geproduceerd. Ze maakten zelfs naaimachines e.d.020 Het Nederlandse bedrijf Germaan verkocht vanaf 1949 Csepel-motorfietsjes onder haar eigen naam.
